Jack Riddell's  1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2

Adam Carola rolls my car on the stage at Concorso Italiano, August, 2007 (I am in the passenger seat).

"In early 2003, after having driven my 1967 Lamborghini 400GT 2+2 for over 250,000 miles (and having already done several basic engine overhauls), I decided it was time to finally perform a full rebuild. I was able to round up most of the parts, but the pistons were a real challenge. One of the wrist pin retainers had broken and allowed the pin to contact the cylinder wall. This left a vertical gouge in the liner about .015” deep. So I need .020” oversize pistons or else I need new liners. I decided to try my luck with pistons first. The factory only produced oversized pistons of .010 so that was no help. After contacting many after-market piston sources, I happened across the BRC web site. I called and talked with Sid at length about my needs. He asked me to send him a sample of the original piston and he would go from there. I sent the sample and about a week later, Sid called to tell me he could reproduce the pistons at .020 oversize and not only that, they would be superior to the originals with better oiling passages and improved skirt.

Sid asked some questions about how the car was driven and I provided examples of how it was used (mostly shows these days). That enabled him to select appropriate rings which reflected the car’s projected use and at the same time, determine groove size for the pistons.

I received the pistons about a month later (it would have been sooner but the racing season was in full swing and BRC was filling many orders for custom pistons). When the time came to fit the pistons, they went into the bores with perfect clearance. Once the engine was all reassembled, it fired up the first try and it has been running perfectly ever since. I really appreciated the one-on-one help provided by Sid and the staff at BRC and posted their contact information on the Vintage Lamborghini Garage, a forum I helped found and currently co-moderate (see http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/VintageLambo/).  This is a Yahoo forum which has grown in membership from six enthusiasts in late 2002 to over 860 current members. When I completed my engine rebuild, I wrote a manual on the process and it is available free on the Vintage forum in PDF format for members. My own web site, comprising mostly a lot of Lamborghini photos from event I have attended, is at www.lambojack.com."
